Wind instruments

Thulaikaruvi (Aerophones commonly known as Wind)

Thulaikaruvi is derived from two distinctive Tamil words, “Thulai”, meaning holed and “Karuvi” meaning instruments. This category is exclusive to the instruments which produce sound primarily by causing a body of air to vibrate, without the use of strings or membranes, and without the vibration of the instrument itself adding considerably to the sound.

Wind instruments are further divided into two categories based on whether vibrating air is contained in the instrument itself or not:

1) Those instruments which, when played, do contain the vibrating air. This class includes almost all instruments generally called wind instruments including the Shangu, Kombu (actual or brass equivalent), brass instruments (e.g., trumpet), and woodwind instruments (e.g., flute and saxophone).

2) Those instruments which, when played, do not contain the vibrating air. This class includes free reed instruments, such as the harmonica (mouth organ).
