A.         Practical

1.         Not less than eight Purattal exercises in three (3) speeds (Kaalam) including the following:

a.         Aathi Thaalam 16 Akshara Purattal

b.         Aathi Thaalam 32 Akshara Purattal

c.         Rupaka Thaalam 12 Akshara Purattal

d.         Rupaka Thaalam 24 Akshara Purattal

e.         Mishra Chaapu Thaalam 14 Akshara Purattal

f.          Mishra Chaapu Thaalam 28 Akshara Purattal

g.         Kanda Chaapu Thaalam 10 Akshara Purattal

h.         Kanda Chaapu Thaalam 20 Akshara Purattal

2.         Play and render orally Thani Aavarthanam (solo) and Panja Jaathi (Five types of) Thathingkinathom in Sama Eduppu for the following Thaalam:

a.         Aathi Thaalam Sama Eduppu

b.         Rupaka Thaalam Sama Eduppu

3.         Student should render orally:

a.         Panja Jaathi Eaka Thaala Alangkara Jathis in three (3) speeds (Kaalam).

b.         Mishra Chaapu and Kanda Chaapu Alangkara Jathis in three (3) speeds (Kaalam).

 

B.         Theory

 

1.         Short notes with examples on Sangeetham, Naadham, Sruthi, Swaram, Swarasthaanam, Staayi, Avarthanam.

2.         Knowledge of the following:

a.         How the seven Thaalam form the 35 Thaalam

b.         Thaalam

c.         Layam

d.         Thriangam (Three Angam)

e.         Types of Eduppu (Sama - Atheetha – Anaagatha)

f.          Jathi

g.         Jaathi

3.         Definition of Purattal (Paran), Mora, Theermanam, Thathinkinathom.

4.         Knowledge of the signs & symbols used in Carnatic music.

5.         Ability to write with signs & symbols used in Carnatic music the following lessons:

            a.         2 Aavarthanam Thakajenu and Thalangku exercise

b.         4 Aavarthanam Thakajenu and Thalangku exercise

c.         Panja Jaathi (5 types of) Thathinkinathoms in Aathi and Rupaka Thaalam.

6.         Life history and the contribution to Carnatic music of the following Miruthangam Vithwans (a and one other).

            a.         Yalpanam Inuvil K Sangarasivam

            b.         Palhani Subramaniya Pillai

            c.         Palgat T. S. Mani Iyer
