A.         Practical

1.         Play and render orally Thani Aavarthanam (solo) and Panja Jaathi (Five types of) Thathingkinathom in the following Thaalam and Eduppu:

            a.         Thishra Jaathi Thirupudai Thaalam Ireddaikalai Kaal (1/4) Eduppu

            b.         Thishra Jaathi Thirupudai Thaalam Ireddaikalai Arai (1/2) Eduppu

            c.         Thishra Jaathi Thirupudai Thaalam Ireddaikalai Mukkaal (3/4) Eduppu

            d.         Chathushra Jaathi Thirupudai Thaalam Ireddaikalai Kaal (1/4) Eduppu

            e.         Chathushra Jaathi Thirupudai Thaalam Ireddaikalai Arai (1/2) Eduppu

            f.          Chathushra Jaathi Thirupudai Thaalam Ireddaikalai Mukkaal (3/4) Eduppu

            g.         Kanda Jaathi Thirupudai Thaalam Ireddaikalai Kaal (1/4) Eduppu

            h.         Kanda Jaathi Thirupudai Thaalam Ireddaikalai Arai (1/2) Eduppu

2.         Ability to accompany for Carnatic vocal pieces and be able to play Thani Aavarthanam (solo) at any points of Eduppu in these musical pieces in the following Thaalam:

a.         Aathi Thaalam

b.         Rupaka Thaalam

c.         Mishra Chaapu Thaalam

d.         Kanda Chaapu Thaalam

3.         Ability to handle improvisational (Mano dharma) Thani Avarthana in Aathi Thaalam using:

            a.         5 Nadai (Panja Nadai/Gati)

            b.         Periyamora with the appropriate concluding Theermanam (Thathinkinathom), for the respective Panja Nadai.

4.         Ability to play for Souka Kaala (Ireddaikalai) Pallavi in Thiruputai Thaalam (Thishra, Chathushra and Kanda Jaathis respectively) and play same in Thiri Kaala, including Thisra Nadai (Gathi).

 

B.         Theory

1.         Definitions and details of the following types of Thaalam:

a.         Thesaadhi Thaalam

b.         Madhayaadhi Thaalam

c.         Chaapu Thaalam

2.         Have in depth knowledge of the Miruthangam including the following:

a.         Complete structure of the Miruthangam

b.         The art of handling of the Miruthangam

c.         The art of tuning the Miruthangam

d.         The use of the Miruthangam in Carnatic music

c.         Knowledge of past and present Miruthangam Vithwans

3.         The Miruthangam's place in an Thaalaissai Inniyam (instrumental orchestra).

4.         Knowledge of the Lakshana, structure and divisions of Pallavi.

5.         Definitions of the following terms in Carnatic music:

a.         Anulomam

b.         Pirathilomam

c.         Vilomam

d.         Pirathamangam

e.         Thivithiyangam

f.          Padhakarppam.

6.         Ability to write with signs and symbols for Souka Kaala (Ireddaikalai) Pallavi in Thiruputai Thaalam (Thishra, Chathushra and Kanda Jaathis respectively) and play same in Thiri Kaala, including Thisra Nadai (Gathi).

7.         The advantages of learning percussion instruments.

8.         Knowledge of the structure and the art of handling the following musical instruments:

a.         Veenai

b.         Parai

c.         Udukkai

d.         Thavil

e.         Chendai

f.          Suddha Mathalam

g.         Pancha Muha Vadhyam

10.        Knowledge of percussion instruments used for the following:

e.         Melissai (Light Music)
